The Women and Gender Health Interest Group (WGHIG) and its three affiliated subcommittees (Maternal Health, Women’s & Reproductive Health, and LGBTQ Health) are composed of researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and students interested in exchanging knowledge, building researchers’ skills and disseminating research findings to inform both policy and clinical decision-making. The WGHIG creates networking opportunities for those who share common goals in understanding how gender affects health services delivery, access, cost, and quality. The Group also fosters the development of gender-based health services research to improve the quality, efficiency, effectiveness, and outcomes of care and the health status and quality of life for women and men of all ages, races, ethnicities, and socioeconomic positions. The goals of the WGHIG are accomplished by the identification, understanding, and development of strategies to improve the quality and delivery of health services in systems and organizational arrangements that are sensitive to gender-based needs and experiences. In addition, strategies to overcome inequalities in health care between women and men, and among women and among men, will be developed.
The Women and Gender Health Interest Group is committed to improving the quality, efficiency, effectiveness, outcomes of care and the health status of women and men of all ages, races, ethnicities, sexual orientations and socioeconomic status. We seek to build a dynamic community amongst those who share common goals in understanding how gender affects health services delivery, access, cost and quality.
The subcommittees consist of AcademyHealth members with clinical, research, and/or policy expertise and interest in specific areas of women and gender health. Each subcommittee identifies their own goals, objectives, and activities for the upcoming year that are aligned and in coordination with the WGHIG. Currently, the WGHIG consists of three subcommittees; Maternal Health, Women’s & Reproductive Health, and LGBTQ Health. All AcademyHealth members interested in Women and Gender Health are welcome to join our subcommittees.
Each Interest Group (IG) is led by a dedicated group of volunteers who shape the information provided to IG members each year. The Advisory Committee is selected on an annual basis with nominations opening in June of each year. Check out this year’s Women and Gender IG Advisory Committee.
