She is the Director of the Behavioral Health Workforce Research Center and is the Deputy Director of the Carolina Health Workforce Research Center—two federally funded health workforce research centers. Considered an expert in social worker roles on integrated health care teams, Dr. Lombardi uses innovative methods to study the expanding role of social workers in integrated primary care.

Her work has been funded by grants through the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the National Institutes of Health.
