J. Adam Oostema, M.D., M.S., FACEP is an associate professor and Director of Neurological Emergency Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.  He earned his medical degree with high honors from Wayne State University School of Medicine, completed residency in Emergency Medicine at the GRMEP/Michigan State University program in Grand Rapids, and received a master’s degree in Epidemiology from MSU.  Dr. Oostema’s research interests include the diagnosis and treatment of neurological emergencies, the application of research evidence to clinical practice, and the impact of quality improvement programs.  Much of his research addresses the role of EMS in facilitating optimal care for acute stroke patients and developing interventions to improve prehospital stroke care through early stroke recognition.   His work with the Michigan Stroke Program led to the development of a linkage between the state stroke and EMS registries, which has been used to validate quality metrics for prehospital stroke care and provide feedback and benchmarking data to EMS agencies across the state.  Dr. Oostema also practices emergency medicine at Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids as well as Corewell Health Gerber Memorial Hospital in rural Newaygo County, Michigan.
