Overview: This webinar features best practices when conducting case studies. Topics include an overview of the proper use of case studies, focusing on applied examples from public health. The session is intended for both researchers and practitioners. Those with training in qualitative research, including case studies, are encouraged to participate in order to refresh their knowledge of current best practices.

In 2009, the Public Health Systems Research (PHSR) program at AcademyHealth conducted a needs assessment of methods training needs in this emerging field. Based on key informant interviews and a survey of researchers, policymakers, and practitioners, the PHSR community expressed a need for additional training in qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Among these, best practices for conducting case studies were considered a high priority. For more information on the field of PHSR, please see, "A Data and Methods Needs Assessment for Public Health Systems Research."

*Due to generous support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the cost of participating in this webinar is subsidized to enable broader participation among the PHSR community.

Faculty Bio: Beth A. Stevens, Ph.D., a qualitatively-trained sociologist, is a senior health researcher at Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. Her current research uses case study methods to evaluate demonstration programs that use community coalitions to generate changes in local health and long-term care systems. Dr. Stevens also does research on the sustainability and replication of social programs.
