Overview:

Health services research as a field encompasses a number of different practice areas. Health care disparities is one such focus area, and provides individuals with the opportunity to move their work into an applied setting and address the greater disparity gap occurring in health care. 

This career development webinar was designed for early career professionals and students to engage with senior professionals in health services research (HSR). Webinar participants learned about different career paths and opportunities in health care disparities. Drawing on perspectives from distinct industries, including academia, government, delivery systems, and managed care, panelists discussed the benefits and barriers of bridging the gaps in research and practice and reducing health care disparities.

Faculty

Samuel F

Samuel N. Forjuoh, M.D., M.P.H., Dr.P.H., F.G.C.P. is a professor of family & community medicine, epidemiology & biostatistics, and health promotion & community health sciences at the Texas A&M University. He is also the director of the Division of Research in the Department of Family Medicine at Baylor Scott & White Health as well as the founding director of the AHRQ-funded Central Texas Primary Care Research Network (CenTexNet) based at Temple, Texas. Formally trained as a generalist physician in Ghana and England, Dr. Forjuoh obtained advanced degrees in biostatistics from Harvard School of Public Health (Master of Public Health) and maternal & child health and injury epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (Doctor of Public Health).

His current research focuses on using health information technology to enhance patient-physician communication and disease management, patient safety and reduction of medical errors, preventive health services in primary care, and injury control and safety promotion. Dr. Forjuoh is a member of many professional organizations including the American Public Health Association, the North American Primary Care Research Group, the American Medical Association, and the Society for Advancement of Violence and Injury Research. He is an Editor-in-Chief of the Int J Inj Contr Saf Promot, and an active ad-hoc peer-reviewer for many journals. He is also a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Center for Injury Prevention & Control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Along with contributing many book chapters, Sam has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers.

 

 Huesch

Marco Huesch, Ph.D., is an assistant professor at the University of Southern California Sol Price School of Public Policy with extensive hands-on clinical and management experience as well as research expertise in health care management, strategy and economics. He is a former practicing physician whose clinical experience includes frontline roles in innovative 24/7 physician-staffed retail clinics in Australia. Dr. Huesch gained extensive private sector experience as a strategy management consultant for the global clients of Booz & Co and EDS, and in financial services with Asia-Pacific as the vice president of strategy and director of business development at Citibank.

Dr. Huesch’s research emphasizes solutions to fundamental health care system problems with a particular focus on strengthening management processes and organizational structure. His work seeks to directly inform health care policy and the work of leaders and managers in care delivery. He teaches courses in health care management, health care strategy, health economics and health services research methods.

Ernest Moy, M.D., M.P.H, is a medical officer in the Center for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). At AHRQ, his work has included directing the development of the annual National Healthcare Disparities Report and National Healthcare Quality Report and related web tools and supporting AHRQ’s Excellence Centers for the Elimination of Ethnic/Racial Disparities and AHRQ’s Patient Safety Organization program. Prior to joining AHRQ, he was director of research and assistant vice president of the Center for the Assessment and Management of Change in Academic Medicine at the Association of American Medical Colleges where he conducted research on the missions of academic medical centers and developed benchmarking tools to help these institutions improve performance. Dr. Moy is a graduate of Harvard College and New York University School of Medicine, as well as a former Robert Wood Johnson Health Care Finance fellow at Johns Hopkins University.

 Matt Rousculp

Matthew Rousculp, Ph.D., M.P.H. is the director of comparative effectiveness research & health policy research at GlaxoSmithKline. He has over 12 years of industry experience in pharmaceuticals and biologics, including U.S. and global focused roles. Prior to that, Dr. Rousculp was part of various federally funded research centers including the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy and The University of Alabma at Birmingham Injury Control Research Center.

Dr. Rousculp completed his undergraduate studies in biological sciences at Rutgers University. He received his M.P.H. in epidemiology and his Ph.D. in Administration – Health Services from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Matt has published over 40 manuscripts and bookchapters in the area of comparative effectiveness research, health services research, disease burden, and economics including papers in JAMA, Journal of American Geriatrics Society, Value in Health, and Academy of Management Executive. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at The Indiana UniversitySchool of Medicine and in the School of Health Professions at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. 

anna scott

Anna Scott, Ph.D., M.B.A., is the vice president of Accountable Care Programs at UnitedHealthcare. Dr. Scott holds a Ph.D. in public administration with a focus on healthcare program evaluation and health policy. Her career in healthcare spans 23 years, leading initiatives in clinical program management and outcomes measurement in Medicaid and Medicare populations. Her passions are to simplify healthcare, translate evidence based care into action, and help address the Triple Aim challenge of lower cost, higher quality and better patient experience. In her current role she leads national Accountable Care Communities and Health Home Programs deployment of Medicaid accountable care organizations in 17 states.  

Woodward LeChauncy Woodard, M.D., M.P.H. is currently an investigator in the Health Policy, Quality & Informatics Program at the Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness and Safety, with the Michael E. DeBakey Veteran Affairs Medical Center. She received her medical degree from University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and has been in practice for 17 years. Dr. Woodards research interests include quality of care, treatment and prevention of chronic diseases, and disparities in health care outcomes.
