Eligibility Requirements


Interested applicants must:

  • Have a doctoral degree or a clinical degree with a research masters in a relevant area such as economics, epidemiology, health services research, or another public health or social science.
  • Be ranked at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, or equivalent;
  • Have a record of peer-reviewed publications, including first author publications, relevant to health care delivery research (with or without a focus on cancer);
  • Document research independence by serving as a Principal Investigator (or equivalent) on a grant or contract funded by an organization such as NIH, AHRQ, or PCORI. Individuals who have served as a Principal Investigator on more than two large grants or contracts are not eligible.  Individuals who have led a contract or a research project within a Program Project, Center Award, or comparable activity may also be considered. 
  • Commit to spend a minimum of 20% full time equivalent and no more than 50% full time equivalent to the program over a one-year period, with a minimum of two and a maximum of 5 days per month on-site at NCI’s Shady Grove facility in Rockville, MD; and
  • Be employed by an institution based in the United States. (Note that the institution must agree to a temporary assignment of personnel using the Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) Mobility Program. Use of the IPA mechanism will be dependent on the status of the HHS hiring freeze.)

2017 Application Timeline

  • February 6, 2017: Application cycle opens
  • April 7, 2017: Application cycle closes
  • May 2017 – June 2017: Interview of selected candidates
  • July 2017: Announcement of selected Scholar(s)
  • September 2017: Program start date
  • August 2018: Program end date

Required Application Materials

Applications must include:

  • A completed Application Form, including:
    • Curriculum Vitae. (Not to exceed 20 pages, single-sided) Include publications and major presentations; previous fellowships, scholarships, honors and awards; and previous and current grant funding of the applicant.
    • Work Plan. (Not to exceed two pages, single-sided) Provide a description of the project that the Scholar proposes to lead during the one-year program.
    • Outline of Career Goals. (Not to exceed one page, single sided) Statement about how serving as a Scholar will advance the applicant’s career goals.
  • Supporting documentation, including:
    • Two letters of recommendation. Applicants must indicate referee information as part of the application. All letters must be:
      • On official letterhead 
      • Signed by your reference

*Applicants should include their full name on all supporting application materials.
Please note, candidates may be asked to complete a telephone interview.

Selection Criteria

The selection committee will evaluate the applications based on:  

  • Relevance and potential contribution of the proposed activity to address an important healthcare delivery question or gap in the cancer continuum;
  • Clarity of the description of proposed activity;
  • Feasibility of completing the activity in a one-year timeframe;
  • Relevance of long term career goals to the healthcare delivery research field;
  • Prior research productivity, including funding and published manuscripts; and
  • Written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to collaborate with peers.
