Background
In partnership with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, AcademyHealth has undertaken a new effort to understand the current health services research (HSR) workforce and plan for its future in the context of our changing health care and research ecosystems.

The primary goals of this initiative are to:

  1. Assess the current HSR workforce
    • Overview of workforce makeup
    • Current HSR training capacity
    • HSR field’s “ecosystem”
  2. Identify future demand for research
    • Ways to increase HSR workforce diversity and equity
    • Overview current and project the future status of team-based research (team science)
  3. Create an action plan for the education of health services researchers, including recommendations for life-long learning

HSR Definition

AcademyHealth defines health services research as the multidisciplinary field of scientific investigation that studies how social factors, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, health technologies, and personal behaviors affect access to health care, the quality and cost of health care, and ultimately our health and well-being. Its research domains are individuals, families, organizations, institutions, communities, and populations.
