Overview

The concept of the learning health system (LHS) was first envisioned by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in Crossing the Quality Chasm (IOM, 2001) and later re-expressed by IOM as:

A system in which science, informatics, incentives, and culture are aligned for continuous improvement and innovation, with best practices seamlessly embedded in the care process, patients and families as active participants in all elements, and new knowledge is captured as an integral by-product of the care experience. (IOM, Best Care at Lower Cost, 2012).

The AcademyHealth Learning Health Systems Interest Group welcomes all interested persons and is composed of a group of individuals from research, informatics, delivery systems, health plans, policy makers, and community-based organizations aligned for continuous improvement and innovation.

Bringing the healthcare sector together with government efforts to fund and train LHS work, public sector investments in sponsoring embedded research, and dedicated journals seeking to highlight the results, we see further synergistic opportunity with the emerging LHS priorities at AcademyHealth to create a home for those interested in LHS.
