Health Services Research:
Building a Common Framework Introduction __________________________________ AcademyHealth AcademyHealth is the professional home for health services researchers, policy analysts, and practitioners, and a leading, non-partisan resource for the best in health research and policy. AcademyHealth promotes interaction across the health research and policy arenas by bringing together a broad spectrum of players to share their perspectives, learn from each other, and strengthen their working relationships. The National Health Council The National Health Council is a private, nonprofit umbrella organization of 110 national health-related organizations working to bring quality health care to all people. Its core membership includes more than 50 of the nation's leading patient groups representing about 100 million people with chronic diseases and/or disabilities. Other Council members include professional and membership associations, nonprofit organizations with an interest in health, and major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. The Council serves as a place for diverse health-related groups to build consensus with a focus on patients and their needs. The Agency for Healthcare Quality Research The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's (AHRQ) mission is to improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans. Information from AHRQ's research helps people make more informed decisions and improve the quality of health care services. AHRQ was formerly known as the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. What is Health Services Research? “Health services research examines how people get access to health care, how much care costs, and what happens to patients as a result of this care. The main goals of health services research are to identify the most effective ways to organize, manage, finance, and deliver high- quality care; reduce medical errors; and improve patient safety.” “Health services research is the multidisciplinary field of scientific investigation that studies how social factors, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, health technologies, and personal behaviors affect access to health care, the quality and cost of health care, and ultimately our health and well-being. Its research domains are individuals, families, organizations, institutions, communities, and populations.” This toolkit provides an outline for hosting interactive meetings regarding the role of HSR in your organization. It will:
The kit includes three sections: Getting started The first section will help define the goals, audiences, and format for your meeting. It also includes a “planning at a glance” sample that provides an overview of major planning steps and a typical agenda. Materials and Templates The second section provides materials and templates to facilitate your meeting. These include case studies, sample agenda, PowerPoint presentations, and discussion questions. All of the materials in this kit can be customized to suit your organization and content needs. However, we ask that you credit the original authors when utilizing PowerPoint presentations, video clips, and case studies. Evaluation Finally, the kit provides a template feedback form to help you gather insight from participants in your meeting. We would also appreciate your feedback on the utility of this kit and its contents as well as any suggestions for future HSR outreach. A separate evaluation form, addressed to the National Health Council, is included for this purpose. _______________ |
