The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) contains several provisions that may alter the scope and practice of public health. As a result, governmental health departments must evolve in order to accommodate the new health landscape and changing demands on the system. In the wake of health systems change, three governmental public health departments--Massachusetts, San Diego, and Vermont--are taking unique approaches to this opportunity for public health innovation. Those efforts are highlighted in this piece.
