Overview

Within AcademyHealth, the Surgical and Perioperative Care Interest Group (IG) is a unique network of multi-professional stakeholders focused on the research and policy issues most important to surgical and perioperative patients. The IG offers a common venue for surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, proceduralists, nurses, health policy analysts, researchers, and policymakers to discuss common, high priority issues that affect the value of care and quality of life for individuals undergoing surgery.

The IG aims to create a forum for procedural practitioners, policymakers and researchers to engage in dialogue and share current and future work.Participating with AcademyHealth creates opportunities outside of specialty societies to build relationships with key policymakers and health services researchers from surgery, critical care and nursing. AcademyHealth also opens doors for trainees and senior investigators with unique grants, scholarships, journal access, and tailored syllabi.

Advisory Committee

Each Interest Group (IG) is led by a dedicated group of volunteers who shape the information provided to IG members each year. The Advisory Committee is selected on an annual basis with nominations opening in June of each year. Check out this year’s Surgical and Perioperative Health Research IG Advisory Committee.

“AcademyHealth provides a unique environment to share ideas, experiences, and ongoing work with health services researchers across a diverse array of disciplines. New collaborations and opportunities have come from my attendance at the Annual Research Meeting. The Interest Groups provide yet another avenue for building valuable professional relationships.”

“I first attended the AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting over ten years ago, and have since enjoyed the increasing representation of surgical health services research. The Surgical and Perioperative Care Interest Group serves as a place for clinician-investigators and researchers to meet in person before the ARM begins, as well as provide opportunity to stay connected throughout the year.”

Elizabeth B. Habermann, PhD, MPH

“Academy Health represents a great forum to discuss research related to improving patients undergoing surgery or procedures in which colleagues from all disciplines can help stimulate work in a diverse manner.”

Meetings built around the clinical specialties are valuable, but the Surgical and Perioperative Interest Group at AcademyHealth is the best forum I’ve found to engage with the diverse people and perspectives from surgery, nursing, critical care, anesthesiology and health policy that focus on the surgical patient.”
