Dana Gelb Safran, Sc.D., joined Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts in the Fall of 2006 as Vice President for Performance Measurement and Improvement for the Health Care Services Division. In this role, Dana leads BCBSMA's initiatives to measure, evaluate and improve the quality, safety, effectiveness and efficiency of care received by BCBSMA members. Prior to joining Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Dana was Director of The Health Institute at Tufts-New England Medical Center 's Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies (ICRHPS) and Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Safran's empirical research has emphasized the measurement of primary care quality, and in particular, has focused on patients' experiences of care and outcomes. She received her doctor of science degree in health policy from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Safran was previously employed by the U.S. Congress Office of Technology Assessment and the United Hospital Fund.
