The second annual Long-Term Care Colloquium, sponsored by The Commonwealth Fund and conducted by AcademyHealth, was held in Boston on June 25th. It provided an opportunity for long-term care (LTC) stakeholders to forge an agenda and bring information to bear on the problems faced by LTC policymakers and practitioners. Building on the momentum generated by the 2004 Colloquium, this year’s meeting highlighted two new policy issues:

1) Linking housing with LTC services; and
2) Consumer-directed care and its implications for state and federal LTC policy.

The two topics introduced last year — the use of information to improve long-term care quality, and the challenges of providing long-term care to people dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid — were also addressed. Our hope is that the colloquium papers and discussion will stimulate timely research and its application to high p riority areas of LTC financing and service delivery.

We had an exceptional lineup of presenters and a format designed to encourage interaction, including ample time for discussion among meeting participants. Stephen Golant, Ph.D., University of Florida and Randall Brown, Ph.D., Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. presented highlights from background papers on this year’s new topics, which was followed by commentary from experts representing providers, consumers, and state and federal policy leaders who placed the discussion in a real world context, and then by facilitated small group table discussions to generate collaboration and questions that were raised during plenary discussion.
