NEW! 2008 HCFO Special Topic Solicitation in Public Health Systems and Services Research Call for Proposals Now Open

Public Health Systems Research (PHSR) is a field of inquiry examining the organization, financing, performance, and impact of health systems – defined as the constellation of governmental and non-governmental actors that influence population health, including health care providers, insurers, purchasers, public health agencies, community-based organizations, and entities that operate outside the traditional sphere of health care.

AcademyHealth is committed to raising the visibility of the emerging field of PHSR through an array of activities – from the special topic research solicitations aimed at building the evidence base, to national events aimed at bringing PHSR stakeholders together, to special events that will highlight for federal policymakers and practitioners the value of supporting an infrastructure for the nation's public health system.

Recently, AcademyHealth convened stakeholders to evaluate the research base to date, assess the discipline's needs, and examine the PHSR research agenda. Participating stakeholders included representatives from national public health membership organizations, academic centers, private organizations that focus on public health, provider groups, and governmental public health agencies. Important findings from this meeting can be found in

Changes in Health Care Financing and Organization (HCFO) — a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, strives to bridge the health policy and health services research communities by funding grants in PHSR.

PHSR Interest Group — members share an interest in applying public health services research methods to address critical issues in public health policy, administration, and practice.
