Leaders from around the world will gather in Washington, D.C., this week for AIDS 2012 to discuss the science, diplomacy, politics, and economics of HIV/AIDS. In conjunction, Health Affairs has released a timely theme issue  examining the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the successes, lessons, and opportunities learned through the program. Editor-in-Chief Susan Dentzer moderated a briefing earlier this month, with authors sharing their insights on how to achieve “an AIDS-free generation.” At the event, Ambassador Eric Goosby, U.S. global AIDS coordinator in the Department of State, explained that while PEPFAR has transformed the outlook on AIDS, it has also transformed the broader health sector and strengthened health systems overall. “The hospitals and clinics, the health workers, the labs, the supply chains—all these focused investments have strengthened national systems to meet the whole range of health needs,” he said. “PEPFAR has given us a chance to take new science, put it to work in the field rapidly, and move it to scale. Once moved to scale, we have the ability to look at what we’ve done, to evaluate it, to analyze it, and to feed that information and understanding back into how our programs interface or don’t interface with the populations we’re concerned with, do or do not retain people in care over time, and meet the evolving needs of people with HIV.” Articles in this issue of the journal explore outcomes of global efforts, the impact PEPFAR on HHS’s global health strategy, and the challenges that still lie ahead.
