The Article-of-the-Year Award recognizes the best scientific work that the fields of health services research and health policy have produced and published during the previous calendar year. The award-winning article provides new insights into the delivery of health care and advances knowledge of the field.

2008

Ming Tai-Seale, Ph.D., received this award for her lead authorship of two articles: “Time Allocation in Primary Care Office Visits,” which appeared in the October 2007 issue of Health Services Research and was co-authored by Thomas G. McGuire and Weiman Zhang, and “Two-Minute Mental Health Care for Elderly Patients: Inside Primary Care Visits,” which appeared in the December 2007 issue of Journal of the American Geriatric Society and was co-authored by Thomas McGuire, Christopher Colenda, David Rosen, and Mary Ann Cook. Dr. Tai-Seale is an associate professor of health economics at Texas A&M Health Science Center.

2007

John Hsu, M.D., M.B.A., M.S.C.E., received this award for his lead authorship on “Unintended Consequences of Caps on Medicare Drug Benefits,” which appeared in the June 1, 2006 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. This article was co-authored by Mary Price, M.A., Jie Huang, Ph.D., Richard Brand, Ph.D., Vicki Fung, B.A., Rita Hui, Pharm.D., Bruce Fireman, M.A., Joseph P. Newhouse, Ph.D., and Joseph V. Selby, M.D., M.P.H. Dr. Hsu is a physician scientist at the Kaiser Division of Research, a fellow at the Kaiser Institute for Health Policy, and a faculty member at the University of California, San Francisco.

2006

Richard L. Kravitz, M.D., MSPH received this award for his lead authorship on “Influence of Patients' Requests for Direct-to-Consumer Advertised Antidepressants,” which appeared in the April 27, 2005 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The coauthors are Ronald M. Epstein, M.D., Mitchell D. Feldman, M.D., M.Phil., Carol E. Franz, Ph.D., Rahman Azari, Ph.D., Michael S. Wilkes, M.D., Ph.D., Ladson Hinton, M.D., and Peter Franks, M.D.

Anthony T. Lo Sasso, Ph.D., University of Illinois at Chicago, is recognized for his lead authorship on “The Effect of the State Children's Health Insurance Program on Health Insurance Coverage. This article, co-authored by Thomas Buchmueller, Ph.D., University of California, Irvine, appeared in the September 2004 issue of the Journal of Health Economics.
