AcademyHealth
focuses on broadly relevant issues, including health care costs, quality,
and access. As such, our work regularly captures the attention of national,
state, and local media. In 2003, our programs and meetings generated
coverage in a variety of outlets, ranging from major national newspapers
to local television news affiliates to articles and Web casts produced
through trade press and health care foundations.
Our
National Health Policy Conference, held January 22-23 in Washington,
D.C. and intended to provide a timely look at critical health policy
issues, garnered the most press last year. At that event, Louisiana
Senator John Breaux (D) unveiled a new policy proposal to reach universal
health care coverage in the United States. The story was covered by
the Associated Press, Gannett News Service, Kiplinger Business Forecasts,
Managed Care Weekly Digest, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today,
and others.
The 2003
Annual Research Meeting in Nashville, which featured a keynote speech
by Senate Majority Leader William Frist, M.D., also drew media attention,
with portions of the talk broadcast by the CBS affiliate in Nashville.
Each
year, our two Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-sponsored programs—Changes
in Health Care Financing and Organization (HCFO) and State Coverage
Initiatives (SCI)—address relevant research and policy issues
that are covered by the press. In 2003, HCFO’s work on end-of-life
care, consumer-driven health care, and mental health disparities was
highlighted by Kaiser Daily Health Policy Report, Managed Care Weekly
Digest, and American HealthLine, among others. Meanwhile, SCI’s
expertise on insurance markets and health care coverage issues was tapped
by MSNBC News, BNA’s Health Care Policy Report, and various
local newspapers.
