HIT and HSR for Actionable Knowledge

AcademyHealth has received funding from the California Health Care Foundation to examine the challenges of using electronically generated data from health information technology (HIT) for secondary analytic purposes including health services research to improve the quality and efficiency of health care. This project continues an AcademyHealth collaboration with six early HIT-adopting health systems — the Veterans Health Administration (VA), Geisinger, Kaiser Permanente (KP), the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF), Denver Health (DH) and the New York City Primary Care Information Project (PCIP) — begun last fall with seed funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

During this project, AcademyHealth and its partners will produce case studies to capture key elements of the experiences in each health system, as well as two cross-cutting, comparative papers. Ultimately, the goal is to identify lessons learned and "best practices" that can be leveraged to help support future health services research using data from HIT systems.

• Roundtable Discussion: From HIT to Actionable Knowledge: Building the Research Bridge
  On February 9, 2010, representatives from five of the partnering health systems participated on a panel at AcademyHealth’s National Health Policy Conference in Washington, DC. This panel focused on a discussion about the role of research in bridging HIT and Actionable Knowledge, and the experiences of five organizations that have been using HIT for research for a long time.
